Heroin worth Rs. 1 lakh seized in Mizoram

Aizawl, July 8 (PTI): Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials today seized 28.5 grams of heroin from Zotlang village close to the Mizoram-Myanmar border in Champhai district, a department spokesman said. The spokesman said that Lalmuanpuii (22) of Champhai town was arrested for alleged possession of the contraband worth around Rs.1 lakh. He said that the seized heroin was reportedly smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar with which Mizoram shares 404-km long porous international border. The accused was remanded to custody and booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Khandu welcomes Army’s development initiative in the state

Itanagar, July 8 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has welcomed the Army’s development initiative in the state and said Tawang has been developed because of them. He also said people of Arunachal Pradesh and the Army share a special bond, when Major General Ashok Dhingra, the GOC of 56 Infantry Division called on him yesterday to discuss defence-related issues in the state, an official release said here today. Dhingra discussed defence land acquisition issue with Khandu, who assured him that all such cases will be taken care of. He said the state government, in cooperation with the Centre, is trying the best to compensate the local people for land wherever acquired by the defence establishment. The chief minister welcomed the decision for a Sainik School in the state and said that it will bring people of the frontier state closer to the Army and youths of the state will find new career opportunities in the defence forces. Dhingra informed the chief minister about various development and welfare activities undertaken by the Army in the border areas. He said the Army also plans to open schools for border people with support from local community, the release added.

Assam govt merges Directorate of Madrassa with Secondary Edu

Guwahati, July 8 (PTI): The Assam Government has merged the Directorate of Madrassa with the Directorate of Secondary Education with immediate effect. The state government ordered the merger of the two directorates through a notification issued to this effect on July 1, said a government release here. The merger came into effect without any change in the nomenclature of the existing Directorate of Secondary Education and its attached offices, if any, the release said.With this, all the offices and staff of the Directorate of Madrassa Education shall automatically be under the administrative control of the Directorate of Secondary Education. Consequent upon the merger, the subjects dealt with by the Directorate of Madrassa Education is allocated in favour of the Directorate of Secondary Education with immediate effect, the release said. The Directorate of Secondary Education will continue to be under the administrative control of the Education Secondary Department, it added.

Arunachal govt favours RS technology for better crop yield

Itanagar, July 8 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has advocated the use of remote sensing technology to identify the suitability of land for different crops across the state. He mooted the idea in a meeting with B V Raman Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Hyderabad-based Remote Sensing Instruments (RSI) here yesterday. Mein said farmers of the state had been blindly cultivating crops without any geomorphological mapping leading to failure of cash crop cultivation in many parts of the state and losses to the farmers, an official statement said here today. He said that remote sensing instruments could be an effective tool for planning in agriculture and horticulture. He requested Agriculture Minister Wangki Lowang to conduct another round of meeting with the officers of RSI and NABARD and get the required data from RSI by letting them conduct land mapping for the state.

APCC demands revival of sanitary napkin scheme

Itanagar, July 8 (PTI): The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today demanded revival of the government scheme for distribution of sanitary napkins, saying its withdrawal is a threat to menstrual hygiene. The Nabam Tuki government had launched the scheme during 2013-14 for providing sanitary napkins for girls studying in government schools (classes VI to XII) with an outlay of Rs 200 lakh. “The programme was one of the creative initiatives by former chief minister for the welfare of the girl child and was particularly beneficial to girl students in the interior areas,” party spokesman Mina Toko said in a statement here today. Ending such welfare programme showed that the government lacked ability to implement pro-people schemes and programme, Toko said.

AICC Minority Observer meets Meghalaya CM

Dimapur, July 8, (EMN): All India Congress Committee (Minority Department) Observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram Rejaul Karim Laskar visited Shillong on July 8. He called on Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma at the Chief Minister’s residence and had a detailed and fruitful discussion with the Chief Minister regarding matters related to the Congress party’s campaign for the 2018 assembly elections in Meghalaya and the possible role of the Minority Department in the campaign. Laskar also visited Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Shillong and left for Guwahati by evening, release stated.

Manipur CM visits flood relief camps

Imphal, July 8 (PTI): Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today visited flood relief camps and directed officials to ensure rehabilitation of affected people at the earliest. Priority will be given to those whose ‘kachcha’ houses were destroyed during last week’s flash flood that hit several parts of Imphal valley, Biren said at relief camps in Thoubal and Imphal East district. Torrential rains that led to flash floods late last week have stopped two days ago but several low lying areas were still inundated. Pumps were pressed into service to flush out water from those areas, the chief minister said. Over 5000 people have taken shelter in various relief camps as waters of Imphal, Nambul and other rivers entered various localities of Imphal, official sources said. A vast farm land area was inundated by the flash flood while around 3000 livestock perished. Incessant rainfall also damaged several sections of highways in Kangpokpi district and Ukhrul district.
