National Road Safety Week begins in Manipur

Imphal, Jan. 17 (EMN): In an effort to prevent and reduce road mishaps and incidents against road transport drivers in Manipur, the state transport department and traffic police has began its National Road safety week in Imphal from Tuesday.

The state transport minister Khashim Vashum and transport secretary Michael Achom along with SP Imphal West district Ksh Shivakanta and Traffic SP Wungpam Kasar were present during the formal kick off function of the National Road safety week at Manipur state transport premises in Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, Vashum appealed to the masses on following traffic rules to avoid unwanted incidents and that one should not drink and drive.

He said long distance drivers should undergo regular health checkups for which the transport department will extend necessary help in organising such health checkups.

A health check up of the drivers was also organised during the day’s event at Moirangkhom in Imphal.

According to official reports, as many as 114 persons lost their lives in 359 road accidents in the state in 2022 while as many as 110 persons were killed in 366 road accidents in the state in 2021.

Among the 16 districts of the state, Imphal West district (90) has the maximum number of road accidents wherein 31 persons lost their lives while among the hill district Noney district (10) witnessed maximum fatalities in 2022.
