‘Nagas are suppressed by Manipur government, Prime Minister apprised’

The United Naga Council (UNC) alleged on Saturday that the Manipur government has been suppressing the Naga people in Manipur.
“The communal government of Manipur, not satisfied with their long years of suppression, oppression and exploitation towards the Naga tribals living in the present state of Manipur, has not given up its persistent attempts to marginalize the Naga tribals and also to grasps our land through its anti Naga tribal policies and decisions under its state Acts, Rules, Orders and Notifications and in the name of law and order and induced development, it is impossible for the Nagas to protect our land, history, time honored institution, culture and identity under the present political system,” the UNC memorandum to the Prime Minister alleged. “With reference to Manipur Gazette No. 26 Part-IX Wednesday, October 19, 2011 (Asvina 27, 1933), the government of Manipur in its notification, Imphal dated the 14th June 2011 had curved out altogether 207 hill (tribal) villages from the hill (tribal) districts in its separate notifications and had included them in police stations of valley district of Imphal East district (including Jiribam), Imphal West, Bishnupur and Thoubal district police jurisdiction. The policy of the dominant community is nothing but to expand its political territorial boundary on tribal areas,” the memorandum mentioned.
According to the UNC, the government of Manipur had forcefully extended and imposed electoral jurisdiction of Gram Panchayat/Zila Parishadon the existing 30 Naga tribal villages of tribal hill district council jurisdiction. “It is a policy of expansion of hegemony of dominant community over Naga tribals and hill districts. Traditional boundary must be honored and protected. Nagas believe the traditional principle of peaceful co-existence of all neighboring communities. However, we will not tolerate any form of force encroachment upon our land under any circumstances,” the UNC asserted.
The Naga body then said the Nagas welcome developmental projects in Naga areas but by violating national and international laws and acts and without consent and informed knowledge of the people, the government of Manipur is determine to construct
“Mega dams/national and international projects like, Tipaimuk Dam, Mapithel Dam and Chakpi river Dam and recently,the Government of Manipur in its attempt to set up Sports University is acquiring 642 acres of land at 44-Yaithibi Loukon, Thoubal district which includes tribal lands of Koijam Maring Naga village and Laiching Maring Naga village. We will not tolerate any induce development aggression in our land,” it also said.
“Therefore, the attention of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India is drawn for immediate intervention withIndo-Naga political settlement,” the UNC urged.
