Dimapur, Jan. 12 (EMN): The Nagaland University Students’ Union (Lumami) has condemned the “heinous attack” on students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) by “ABVP hooligans”.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the union expressed sadness at the turn of events that has now transformed the JNU into a “bleeding war zone”.

“At this point of vexatious situation, it is very much evident that it is no longer a simple issue of fee hike but of political motive, as evident from the politically driven mob attacks by the goons and police personnel themselves. Whereby, the students, specifically the president of JNUSU, Asihe Ghosh, were brutally beaten and several students are currently in critical condition. It is a shame for the ABVP to even claim themselves as a students’ council body because of their horrific actions towards teachers and fellow students,” it stated.

The union further expressed astonishment at what it stated was the incompetence and cowardice of the police personnel to intervene and provide security.

“But what astounds the most is the disgraceful respond of the JNU VC and his administrative colleagues in doing bare minimum to nothing for the safety of its very own students and faculties who are crying for help. This clearly shows his dereliction of duty and has failed in his duty of care towards the students and staff of his university.

“The NUSU (L) believes that this renders him unfit to hold the highest post in an internationally recognised institution of higher education and robustly supports the demand of the immediate resignation of the current vice chancellor, for such a prestigious position is not for the cowardly,” read the statement.
