Nagaland exports world’s hottest chilli to London

Dimapur, July 28 (EMN): The first consignment of Naga king chilli, which is considered to be the world’s hottest chilli, was officially exported to London on Wednesday by Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board (NSAMB) with the support of APEDA Guwahati.

G Ikuto Zhimomi, Chief Executive Officer of Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board (NSAMB), informed during an interaction with journalists that the Naga king chilli had passed the laboratory test conducted by Delhi test house; and since they were ‘satisfied’, the organic products were accepted in the European market.

‘300 kg of Naga king chilli has been exported to London today (July 28),’ he added.

He informed that this time, all the consignment was from Peren district; although Naga king chilli is grown all over the state, most of the production is from Peren district. He also said that if the cold chain is not broken, king chilly could remain fresh for up to 15 days.

He further informed that next crop on the pipeline for export was pineapple, followed by kiwi, ginger and large cardamom. He also said that according to the exporters, the targets were Australia, Dubai and European markets.

The managing director said that the next consignment would depend on the exporters. He added that Nagaland is ‘very popular’ in organic production and according to official statistics reports of the Agriculture and Horticulture department, the state procures more than 40,000 MT annually but “market for specifically organic is not available”.

Informing that the chief minister of the state had taken the initiative to introduce Air Cargo service in March 2021, Zhimomi said they were making use of the service through Horticulture department, marketing department and other agencies.
