SENAPATI, MAY 8

All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) in collaboration with Mewar University, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan organized a one-day Participatory Workshop on ‘Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students’ to create awareness about the renewed Centrally Sponsored Scheme which is intended for the benefit of Scheduled Tribe students who are pursuing Pre-Graduation, Graduation and Post-Graduation courses (including professional courses) so that tribal students could have access to quality higher education. The workshop was held at DIOCESAN SOCIAL SERVICE SOCIETY (DSSS), Mantripukhri, Imphal on May 7.
The workshop was being organized to help students’ union leaders, teachers, administrators, leaders of educational institutions, students and parents to gain awareness of the scheme, details related to the scheme such as pattern of funding and assistance, eligibility criteria, the benefits, procedure for applying etc., as announced by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
This Centrally sponsored scheme was renewed to be implemented by the state w.e.f July 1, 2010 however, the state government has not been able to implement the scheme as desired. On June 13, 2014, ANSAM met with the Directorate of TA & Hills led by the Principal Secretary (TA & Hills) and agreed for the implementation of the aforementioned scheme but they have failed thus far.
In the workshop, all the participants unanimously voiced that this particular scheme should be implemented by the concerned ministry. This scheme is one that is entitled to the Scheduled Tribe students and not just because of the economic backwardness.
ANSAM called on the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs on the 2nd March 2015 and had sought his assurance for adherence to the guidelines of the Scheme. ANSAM leaders have also assured the participants that they would take the initiative of meeting with the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs again at the earliest to remind him for speedy implementation by the respective state governments.
