DIMPAUR, MARCH 28

Outrage across the state’s population continues against the growing lawlessness in Nagaland, currently being reflected by the recent unprecedented spate of violence in various parts of the state, particularly bomb explosions and yesterday’s attack on the Assam Rifles in Kohima. Organizations representing various walks of life have demanded from the halfhearted state government and its agencies that they start acting and hunt down the perpetrators responsible for the breach of public peace and security.
‘Act of terror’, says Nagaland contractors
The Nagaland Contractors & Suppliers Union (NCSU) issued a statement on Saturday decrying the bomb explosion in Wokha town and the attack on personnel of the Assam Rifles near the Indira Gandhi stadium in Kohima.
The leadership of the union called the violence ‘act of terror,’ ‘unscrupulous,’ and cowardice’ of miscreants whose sole intension was to destroy the “hard-earned peaceful atmosphere in Nagaland.” These criminals acts deserve the strongest condemnation from all peace -loving citizens of Nagaland, the contractors said. The NCSU has appealed to all right thinking citizens of Nagaland to step forward united and fight the menace and their acts of terror. The Naga society will not succumb to it, the union stated.
Postgraduates tell FNR to ‘demonstrate’
In the light of the recent incidents that took place in Kohima near the IG Stadium and the explosions in Wokha town, the Post Graduate Students Union ( PGSU) of Nagaland University has strongly condemned the violence which it said had brought fear into the minds of the people and disturbed peace .
The students’ community has asked ‘all to abstain from disrupting social order while maintaining peace and harmony in the land.’
Alluding to the Naga undergrounds in this context, the PGSU also ‘endorsed’ the Forum for Naga Reconciliation in its quest to reconcile the warring groups. The union reminded the forum to ‘demonstrate their commitment into action towards the common hope through reconciliation and fully supported the Naga reconciliation.’
The PGSU has asked the Naga underground groups, civil society, churches and individuals to stand united and condemn ‘those groups and individuals.’
Longsa forum wants CBI probe
The Dimapur Longsa Youth Forum (DLYF) has also issued a note on Friday denouncing the act of terror. “These devilish designs not only brought death , casualties and fear psychoses to the public but also develop a negative trend to the young innocent mind. Therefore The SIT/CBI team while investigating the person responsible for these acts should also thoroughly study the root causes of these kinds, happening in Nagaland,” the forum sated.
The organization backed the demand for CBI investigation to probe the two cases to hunt down the perpetrator at the earliest.
To the apathetic government of Nagaland, the forum urged it and the district administration to immediately reinstate police check posts and cancel trade License for arms and “related establishments.” These agencies invite smuggling of arms and ammunition into the state, the forum stated. This is a state and national security issue, it stated. The forum urged the police force and paramilitary to undertake mobile checking ‘round the clock, at every strategic junction and location, so that illegal activities are controlled.’
The Nagaland government is asked to grant ex-gratia to all the victims including the owners of the houses, shops, or vehicles affected by the violence. The forum has extended condolences to the bereaved family members and wished speedy recovery to the injured persons.
Act of coward, says youth
The Lhisemia Youth Organization ( LYO) has denounced the firing on Assam Rifles personnel by unidentified gunmen near the IG Stadium on March 26, and called the attempt cowardly and serious.
According to a condemnation note issued by the union, such violence in public areas endanger innocent. The ‘cowardly and serious act’ should be condemned by every right-thinking citizen, the organization stated.
The youths have appealed to the law enforcing agencies to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book and deliver justice to the victims at the earliest. The organization said it will not tolerate anti-social elements that create fear psychosis among the public.
