Mokokchung, Sep. 24 (EMN): As part of the ongoing “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign, the PHED Mokokchung division conducted a mass shramdaan and cleaning of water bodies in 14 villages on September 23 and 24 in Mokokchung district.

Cleaning of water bodies activities were initiated by WATSAN committee, wherein the community also participated in removing the wastes in and around the villages.

Swachhagrahi of the villages took the responsibility of door-to-door collection of plastic waste, besides educating the community on the importance of waste segregation and the negative effect of plastic waste.

The segregated plastic wastes were later collected by the department and deposited at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) under Mokokchung Municipal Council.

In a related programme, the PHED, Wokha division, launched the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign on September 23 at Etsutchukha Pump site in Wokha district headquarters.

According to a DIPR report, the SDO (C) of Wokha, Tsidi, administered the pledge and urged the people to stop using single-use plastics and resolve to do their bit to keep their land and water bodies free from plastic litter.

As part of the campaign, a massive cleanliness drive and tree plantation was carried out at the site and also pledged to stop littering and ban single-use plastic (SUPs). The executive engineer of PHED Wokha Division, Imnazulu, stated that trees are planted to improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, and climate

amelioration. He added that public participation is critical in banning SUPs and added that the success of banning plastic would be possible only through effective engagement and concerted actions by all stakeholders.

The event culminated with a pledge to refuse, reduce, recycle, reuse, repair, re-gift, recover and rethink plastic.
