Millet Festival celebrated in Meluri village
Kohima, Aug. 31 (EMN): Meluri Millet Sisters, in collaboration with Millet Network of India and Northeast Network (NEN), celebrated the 2nd edition of ‘Millet Festival’ in Meluri village under Phek district on August 31 on the theme ‘Celebrating common heritage for a shared, resilient future.’
The SDAO of Meluri and special guest of the event, Phrumasie Nyuthe, has stressed on the importance of agriculture, without which human sustenance and livelihood would be impossible. He advocated that millet, being known as the most tolerable crop for human health, should be preserved and also promotes its production.
Delivering the keynote address, Velazonuo Kikhi, NEN associate project leader, appealed to the people of Meluri and Pochury community as a whole to encourage and support millet farmers for the uplift of society.
Greeting messages were delivered by Kezunyipeu Tsiihah, chairperson of Chizami Women Society; village council chairmen of Meluri and Khumiasü, while the Head GB of Meluri, Zuspa Kajiri, spoke on the topic ‘Millet and its cultural significance to Pochury community.’
Report stated that Kürütsechu Cotton SHG of Meluri and Cotton Group SHG of Khumiasü presented a traditional item each on the occasion.
Earlier, the special guest inaugurated exhibitions and farmers’ market stall.
Around 100 people attended the festival including millet sisters, public leaders and various SHGs.
