Kohima, Dec. 5 (EMN): The second edition of Indigenous Go-Cart Racing, a feature of the ongoing annual Hornbill Festival, was held in Kohima town on Tuesday morning.
The NSF Martyrs’ Memorial point marked the starting line of the traditional open-wooden-wheel race and Old MLA Hostel Junction was the finish line. The event, organised by Go Travels Kohima, drew a large number of enthusiasts and 40 teams participated in the competition which was flagged off by Thejakielie Zuyie.
Medoyoto Kotso and Ngopisa Kotso from Kidima village won the race while the second and third positions were bagged by contenders from Phesama village: Kedo and Kelezo, and Khriedi Mejura and Neilhouvoto Chuse.
The first and second place winners were awarded two gear bicycles each and the third place winners were awarded two bicycles without gear. All the participating teams also received certificates.
Sievituo Solo, organising member, said the event was aimed to promote the indigenous game and see that the Naga culture is not lost. “It is more eco-friendly and it does connect us to the young memories,” he stated, adding, “We look forward to promoting more indigenous games in future”.
For Zavekho Resu, a spectator, the race reminded him of his childhood days. “I still remember my partner, my childhood friend, Johne who is always ready to push me, but my dad who broke my cart with his dao because I was too much,” he gushed.
Neisavituo Yhoshü, a rider, said he decided to participate in the event as registration was free, there was no age limit, and the prize was fetching. He said a lot of youngsters were usually addicted to cell phones these days which was why he feels the youth are losing their old traditions.
Another rider, Mhalevolie Viketou was reminiscent of his past when he and his friends make the go-cart themselves. He said does not have time to play anymore but the event presented him the opportunity to revive his old bonding.
