Imphal, Jan. 6 : The 42nd Foundation Day of the Manipur Press Club was held today at the premises of the Manipur Press Club at Major Khul in Imphal. The chief secretary of the Government of Manipur, Oinam Nabakishore Singh, was the chief guest. The commissioner for Information K Radhakumar, and the Director General of Police of Manipur LM Khaute were the guests of honour.
The president of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union’s Wangkehemcha Shamjai was president of the event respectively.
Speaking during the function, Chief Secretary Oinam Nabakishore Singh said journalism in the state had been evolving day by day. He said that the standard of journalism was developing both in the print and electronic media. Oinam Nabakishore Singh appealed to the media fraternity to give more emphasis to subject specializations such as investigative journalism. He urged the people to develop smartphone apps that will enable users to keep themselves informed with local news.
Also, in his address, the Commissioner of Information K Radhakumar said that the need of the hour was objective assessment in reporting. He appreciated the role of media.
The Director General of Police, LM Khaute also addressed the event. He said that the relation between the police and media was ‘improving.’ Both the police and the media work together for the society, he said. The police department is committed to the welfare and security of media persons in Manipur, he added.
During the Foundation Day function, veteran journalists who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the press club were warmly felicitated. Journalists who took part in the recently concluded 8th NE Media Sports festival in Guwahati and who bagged the overall team champion prize with five gold and three silver medals were also felicitated.
The Manipur Press Club was established on this day in 1975.
