IMPHAL, Jan 6. : In a move to enrich literatures of social exclusion in the north east region states particularly in Manipur, a 196-page book titled ‘Social exclusion, Marginalisation and Deprivation in Manipur’ was released during a simple function in the court hall of Manipur University near here on Friday.

The new vice chancellor of Manipur varsity, Adya Prasad Pandey, who assumed charge in October end last year; dean of School and Social Science Prof N Lokendra; director of CSSEIP, Prof E Binoy were the chief guest, guest of honour and functional president, respectively, of the function.

Teachers, scholars, students and media persons attended the event. Dr N Damodar of the economics department of the university highlighted important topics and social issues featured in the book.
Speaking during the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey assured that the existing grievances being faced by the university’s centres will be looked into it. “I will try to do my best to address the current grievances of these centres,” VC Prof Pandey said. “It is also necessary to release more such books by other departments (of the University).”

There are around eight centres under Manipur University. They are the Educational Multimedia Research Centre, the Centre for Entrepreneurship & Skill Development, CSSEIP, the Centre for Manipur Studies, the Centre for Myanmar Studies, Gandhian Studies, Research Instrumentation and Human Rights & Duties Education.

All these centres are facing problems. Even the faculty members and other staffs are not getting their salaries regularly, according to Prof N Lokendra, the dean of Schools of social science of the university.

In his address, Prof E Bijoy, the director of CSSEIP called upon the faculty members to write more books ‘on their own’ besides producing working papers. Giving recognition to the centre, the authorities here have requested the CSSEIP to start a 3-month project to prepare a 2030 vision document for the state government, he added.

Prof Bijoy also informed the gathering that a proposal has been sent to the North Eastern Council for construction of a separate building for the CSSEIP.

Earlier Dr Nepram Damodar of the Economics department, Manipur University, briefly reviewed the book.
