Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, the only government school in Mokokchung district to be equipped with Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) around its campus, has added another feature to its facilities. On Wednesday, the school added to it science stream a laboratory sponsored by the Ministry of Science & Technology, department of Biotechnology.
The laboratory was sponsored by the Ministry of Science & Technology, department of Biotechnology (North East Region). The new section was formally inaugurated by deputy commissioner of Mokokchung district, Sushil Kumar Patel.
In his speech, the deputy commissioner lauded Professor Dr. Chitta Rajan Deb, of the department of Botany at Nagaland University, for ‘making all the efforts to make the laboratory into a reality.’ The new laboratory would not only benefit the students of the school but would greatly assist science students from neighbouring schools too, Patel said.
Patel also reminded the teachers that building and equipments were only a medium to assist in teaching. It is the teachers that impart knowledge to students, the administrator said. Saying that the biotechnology had ‘great scope for employment opportunities in various fields,’ the deputy commissioner urged the science students to take full advantage of the ‘well-equipped biotech laboratory’ in their institution.
Prof Dr. Chitta Rajan Deb also gave a presentation during the event. The presentation of the professor was on the topic “Introduction to plant tissue culture and biotechnology.” He said that rapid growth in the field of biotechnology makes it very important to create awareness at the school level. The professor also informed that he was ready to provide training to teachers for free.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, district education officer, sub divisional education officer, of Mokokchung district, and teachers and students from Queen Marry Higher Secondary School and Senayangba Government Higher Secondary school attended the event.
According to officials, altogether 88 higher secondary schools were selected under the programme in the northeast region. Nagaland had sent proposal for five schools out of which three schools were selected in the first phase. The new laboratory will also be available to research scholars and adjoining schools that offer science streams.
