Kohima, June 1 (EMN): Emerging from what it was earlier known for its notoriety and anti-social activities two decades ago, the Lower Agri ward in Kohima is now thriving and transformed as one of the peaceful colonies in Kohima.

This was made known during the 25th anniversary celebration of Lower Agri Youth Organisation (LAYO) held at Penta Point on Wednesday.

“Once upon a time, the colony was tagged as the “atrocious” and “worst” colony with youth involved in substance abuse and other anti-social elements. This had led to the formation of the colony youth body for peaceful co-existence,” stated LAYO president, Abel Assumi.

With the consent from the ward chairman, the youth organisation was formed on June 1, 1997. Under the body, it brought all the youths together irrespective of caste, colour, and religion but unity. Today, things have changed for the better and many activities were taken up, Assumi added.

Speaking on the theme ‘Youth with integrity,’ professor at the Nagaland University, Dr. GT Thong, stated that integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is around and youth have to live with high standards of integrity. He has called for instilling these qualities in the younger generation for a better future. He stated that promoting integrity, in turn, would create harmony in society.

He, however, lamented that nepotism and tribalism are killing the Naga society today. While admitting that the political system promotes nepotism, he stated that the youth have the power to eradicate them. He, however, stated that with integrity, clean election was possible adding the people could expect just leaders and politics.

“With Covid-19 impacting the basic facilities, youth have a bigger role to play today to build a resilient society. Youth must seek accountability to strengthen the institution and the rule of law,” he said adding, “A person with integrity is trusted because they do not compromise on their ideals and ethics and society believes in them.”

Advisor of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie Kire, unveiled the monolith and challenged the youth to take on further responsibilities. He appreciated the residents for becoming more conscious and challenged all to take part and contribute towards the cleanliness of the city. The advisor also urged the youth to come together and extend help whenever called for.

Considering the extravagant lifestyle of the Nagas when it comes to gifting, he advised the residents on living a moderate lifestyle. He also encouraged dignity of labour in order to live a decent life.

“Don’t be ashamed of doing small jobs with a clean heart,’ Kire said.
