IMD issues orange alert for heavy rain in northeast

DIMAPUR — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Nagaland and other north-eastern states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places due to an approaching cyclone.

The cyclonic storm currently brewing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to make landfall near the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh as a severe cyclonic storm on May 26.

“Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura is likely to get isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls (>204.4 mm) on 27th May and heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 26th & 28th May, 2024,” it stated in a post on X.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, the IMD has forecasted squally weather conditions in the North Bay of Bengal, with gale-force winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph from the morning of May 25.

It also advised fishermen in the Bay of Bengal region to stay ashore, urging them not to venture out from May 24 onwards until the morning of May 27.
