Farmers trained on soyabean cultivation

Dimapur, July 7 (EMN): Dhansiripar block of the agricultural technology management agency (Atma) organised a field day and also formed a food security group (FSG) at Dhansiripar village on July 5 and 6.

An update from Atma stated that the resource person Dr. Lowrence Kithan, scientist of AICRP-ICAR from SASRD: NU, Medziphema, urged the farmers to increase soyabean production through adoption of improved technology such as line sowing, maintenance of optimum spacing, inter-cropping etc. He also demonstrated on sowing of soyabean following line sowing method and also informed that soyabean, being a nitrogen fixing crop, helps to improve fertility of the soil under organic condition.

It added that the participants visited a maize field for inspection of fall armyworm. The farmers were demonstrated on spraying of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) and saccharopolyspora spinosa (15% EC) for the control of fall armyworm in maize and other caterpillar pests of all crops.

The field day programme was attended by 15 farmers. Soyabean seeds and spades were provided to the participants.

Meanwhile, a food security group consisting of 10 women farmers was also formed. Moainla, BTM, spoke on the concept, roles and responsibilities of FSG. Besides, a capacity building programme on vegetable cultivation was also conducted for the members.
