Farmers trained on seed production at Heningkunglwa village

Dimapur, Oct. 19 (EMN): ICAR-KVK Peren, Jalukie conducted a training programme at Heningkunglwa village for farmers on seed production of oilseed toria and pulse green gram through participatory mode on Oct.18.

The training was held in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NER, Nagaland centre, Jharnapani. During the programme,  practices of toria and green gram cultivation were discussed by Dr. Harendra Verma, scientist, Plant Breeding, ICAR Jharnapani and Dr. Patu K Zeliang, SMS, Plant Breeding, KVK Peren, an update informed.

It said that farmers were taught the different steps to be followed for seed production of toria and greengram, the difference between grain and seed production and how they can gain more economic benefits by going for seed production.

Farmers were also sensitised about the importance of utilising the fallow rice fields for cultivating second crops like toria and also winter vegetables to increase their income and improve their livelihood. After the programme, seeds of toria, field peas, green peas and winter vegetables were distributed, it said. It informed that a field visit to paddy fields adopted under KVK Peren experimental trials was conducted to show the feasibility of cultivating toria after rice harvest at the end of the programme. 31 farmers attended the programme, it added.
