DIMAPUR — The ESA Warriors emerged as the champions of the inaugural edition of the Seniors Masters League (SML) 2023-2024, following their victory over the Kohima Legends by a margin of 101 runs. The final was played at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium, Sovima, Chümoukedima.

The ESA Warriors chose to bat first after winning the toss, setting a target of 183 runs while losing nine wickets in 20 overs. The ESA Warriors faced an early setback as they lost their top-order batsmen in quick succession due to superb bowling by Ruduovotso of the Kohima Legends in the second over of the match.

At one stage, the ESA Warriors found themselves at 39/3 in 5.3 overs. However, the opening batsman, Azimur Rahman, played a pivotal role in stabilising the innings by forming a much-needed partnership with Aosashi, effectively keeping the scoreboard ticking.

The tailender batsman, Wati Imsong, delivered a blistering performance, scoring 59 runs off just 27 balls. His explosive contribution played a significant role in propelling the team’s total to a challenging target of 183 runs.

While chasing the target, the Kohima Legends kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bundled out for a mere 81 runs in just 12.2 overs.

The Man of the Match title was awarded to Wati Imsong of the ESA Warriors for his outstanding contribution of 59 runs. Along Pongen of the ESA Warriors was recognised as the Best Bowler, while Pankaj Kumar Ghosh received the award of the Best Batsman for his impressive individual score of 390 runs throughout the tournament.

Bovika K Yeptho of Chumou Blaster was honoured as the Best Wicketkeeper, and Vizalie Shuya of Kohima Old Boys was named the Man of the Series.

While speaking at the prize distribution ceremony, the secretary of the Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA), Hyunilo Anilo Khing, stated that the NCA is where it is today thanks to BCCI’s support and lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for his tireless efforts and foresight.

Khing expressed that the Seniors Masters League (SML) has ushered in a new era in promoting the game of cricket.

It was also revealed that NCA participates in all BCCI domestic matches by sending eight teams, four men’s teams and four women’s teams, with a total of 120 players participating during the seasons, which begin in September and end in March.

It was mentioned that in one season, the total income of all the players is nearly INR 3 crore.
