DIMAPUR, MARCH 25

With much pomp and gaiety, the Annual Sports Meet of St. Paul Higher Secondary School, Dimapur got underway today at the school campus with Sentiyanger Imchen, IAS, Commissioner, Nagaland as a chief guest.
While indicating that the present system of education lack balanced of curriculum where students just study from the text books but do not have any development of an all round personality, Imchen said “Education is not only about mastering the text books to get a good job. Equally important are the values you (one) learns in school such as honesty, discipline and responsibility which go to make a person a responsible citizen in society”. “We have often neglected this aspect, giving too much importance to academics with the result that we have produced students who have mastered their subjects but are not good citizens unaware of their social responsibilities. This is one of the primary reasons why we see so much of lawlessness and social evils in present day society of Nagaland”, he further added.
He has also stressed that students must have values such as punctuality, cleanliness, honesty, dignity of labour, courtesy, respect for elders, and discipline. “All these qualities go to make a person into a good citizen who then becomes an asset to society”, he maintained.
While highlighting on the importance of games and sports Imchen said it should be an integral part of the curriculum because it builds in the students many important qualities. “We learn team spirit, fair play, to give ones best and above all the meaning of sportsmanship”, he said while adding sportsmanship rejects all foul play and it means that one gives his best to win and at the same time take defeat as part of the game and sportsmanship builds friendship, unity, team spirit, attitude of give and take and respect for others.
Earlier, greeting on the occasion, Rev. Mother Jessina, Principal of the school said that one need to be fit both physically and mentally. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi she said education is all round development.
