The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization (NVCO) has cautioned citizens to guard against fraud when handling Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transactions. A driver in the secretariat in Kohima is said to have been conned by an unidentified fraudster who, claiming to be an SBI official, extracted sensitive access from said person.
The NVCO issued a press release on Tuesday stating to have met with the chief manager of the State Bank of India in Kohima in this regard.
According to the NVCO, the victim was one A Inavi Chishi, a senior driver in the department of Transport & Communication. He is said to have received several calls from an unidentified number. The caller claimed to be an official of the SBI in Gawahati and informed the driver that his ATM had been blocked. To restore the ATM account, the victim was to provide access details such as the PIN. Within a few minutes, the NVCO stated, the caller said to have ‘restored’ the ATM account. However, following suspicion, the driver contacted the authorities from whom he learned to have been conned.
“It was lucky that his monthly salary was yet to be deposited to his bank account. Inavi Chishi has (had) to block his ATM and apply for a fresh one and it is necessary as he has to draw his monthly salary through ATM,” the NVCO stated. The NVCO also “requested him to spread the news so as to avoid this kind of fraud cases.”
To our Eastern Mirror readers: No bank will ever, ever call you or ask for details about your access codes, accounts, and numbers. Be alert!
