After a gap of two years, Chuchuyimpang village’s well known lake, the Amoklushi, will be teeming with activity as anglers trying their luck to hook a fish or two. Starting from July 10, a group of young people from Chuchuyimpang, a village in Mokokchung, is organizing ‘Amoklushi Angling Fiesta 2015’, a fishing event that will continue till August 10.
With angling having become a favorite pastime for people of all age groups in the area, the angling ‘fiesta’ is expected to attract a considerable number of people from far and near as it has been in the past years.
Amoklushi, considered the biggest lake in Mokokchung district, is located near Fazl Ali College, some 4 kilometers away from Mokokchung town.Organizers have made elaborate plans to ensure that anglers have a productive time during the angling event. On the first day, there will be a competition for which organizers will be giving away a cash prize of Rs 15, 000 to the one who catches the biggest fish; the second biggest will be given a cash prize of Rs 8, 000. The entry fee for the first day will be Rs 600 and anglers are allowed two fishing rods, an organizing committee member said.
The lake has been open to anglers for the past many decades and the lake is well-known for having thrown up the biggest fish. A man caught a fish weighing nearly seventeen kilos some years back.
The lake is closely related to the history of Chuchuyimpang village. It has become not only a local tourist attraction but a commercial and recreational spot for people in and around the village. The lake was closed to angling for the past two years due to renovation works on the lake. Since breeding fishes began two years ago, the organizers and local anglers alike are expecting that the lake will produce some amazing catches during the next one month of angling.
