Car thieves, cars, and booze loaders’ conference at police station

Kohima busy had a rough Tuesday following a series of hits and misses with the colourful characters of the state, normally car thieves, alcohol smugglers and the usual stolen vehicle driving into the welcoming arms of the authorities at police check points.
Kohima police issued a press release on Tuesday informing of series of arrests and events, including two vehicles that escaped.
On March 29, personnel from the District Intelligence Branch and Anti Vehicle Theft Squad and A/10 NAP (IR) conducted routine checking and frisking exercises along National Highway 29 in Kohima. The enforcement personnel spotted two Santros approaching in high speed, the press release stated.
“The personnel on duty signalled the vehicles to stop but (the vehicles) instead sped away. As a result of this, three warning shots were fired by the A/10 NAP (IR) personnel which was followed by a hot pursuit. However, the said vehicles managed to evade the police taking advantage of the terrain and heavy traffic vehicular movements,” the police stated in the press release.
In another case, a Hyudai Santro carrying ten cases of liquor was caught by the enforcement. The press release said that the vehicle, bearing the registration number DL3C/AB4965, chassis number MALABS1HR3M360025 and engine number G4HD3C38460, was carrying 10 cases of MC Rum.
The press release stated: “The driver of the vehicle one Nikato Sumi (27 yrs), S/o – Toikhu Sumi, village- Kuhuboto, District – Dimapur, Present add- Toluzouma Block 5, PO/PS:- Diphupar B, was arrested and the vehicle along with the seized liquor has been seized and a regular vide South P.S case No.0016/2016 U/S 44 NLTP Act is registered against him.”
Stolen vehicle recovered
In another case again, the same team of enforcement personnel the team intercepted a Maruti Alto the authorities said was stolen. The vehicle bore the registration number NL07-9198. The vehicle was stopped from the same location where the first case took place, the press release said.
The vehicle was stopped on suspicion and, following verification of the vehicle’s records, it was ascertained that the vehicle was stolen from Dimapur in the year 2012 and was wanted/involved in East Police station case, the press release stated.
“Accordingly, the Police Commissionerate (sic) of Dimapur has been informed to take over the stolen vehicle and two accused from Kohima Police.
