DIMAPUR — A workshop on ‘alternative assessment in enhancing students’ writing skills’ was conducted by the research cell of the Capital College of Higher Education, Kohima, in collaboration with CUE Academy, Centre of Writing Skills, on Friday.

According to a press release, the workshop was part of the college’s ongoing collaboration with CUE Academy, which was formalised by a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

It was driven by the objectives of introducing students to alternative assessment strategies for enhancing their writing skills, providing practical training in using self-assessment and peer-assessment checklists to improve the redrafting process, and equipping teachers with tools and techniques for assessing student writing and providing constructive feedback.

The workshop was attended by B.A. first semester students, and the core activity of the workshop involved the students writing an essay on a given topic.

This served as the foundation for applying alternative assessment strategies. Students were guided on how to use alternative assessment strategies, particularly self-assessment and peer-assessment checklists.

Vezolu Puro, a writing instructor from CUE Academy, served as the workshop’s resource person, providing feedback to students and emphasising areas for improvement in their writing.

Students were specifically trained in the art of redrafting using alternative assessment strategies. They were encouraged to use the feedback and revise their essays.

Teachers who attended the workshop were also given a teacher feedback format. The format was designed to assist them in assessing the students’ writings effectively.

They also received training on how to provide comprehensive feedback to students, focusing on constructive criticism and guidance for improvement.
