DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 4

A plywood factory at Chumukedima under Ward 11 was completely ravaged in a major fire that broke out this afternoon.
The fire, which reportedly occurred at around 1.20 pm, continued for another five to six hours. It was finally controlled with the help of five fire tenders and volunteers from near and far, but not before it damaged almost every thing that is inside the spacious timber factory, Green Timber, located just few yards away from the new Deputy Commissioner’s complex at Chumukedima. The actual cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but it is suspected the inferno was caused by short electrical circuit.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, proprietor of the timber factory Bajrang Bucha attributed the cause of the fire to short circuit.
The damage could cost the owner heavily as nothing was spared except the few materials that could be removed in time. Apart from the houses inside the factory, the devastating fire damaged all the machines, wood, furnished products and also the residential quarters of the labourers and staff which lie adjacent to the factory.
Even though the Fire Brigade personnel gave their best to douse the blaze, questions has been raised about ability of the fire fighters to control the fire in time.
The fire was brought under control only after five to six hours from the time it started. Though five fire tenders were pressed into service, shortage of water supply was the sole reason why the fire continued for hours.
The loss of property could not be ascertained till the time of filing this report as the fire personnel and volunteers were engaged in dousing the fire till late night.
