Katrina Kaif: It was good to overcome my fear and have my own voice
Some are addicted to it. Some love it. Others love to hate it. You can follow it, unfollow it, but you can’t ignore it. Such is social media. Some Bollywood stars have taken to it like a fish takes to water, but there are a few who have kept it at a far stretch from their fingertips. Like Katrina Kaif, who wasn’t bitten by the social media bug until now, because she felt, “It is tricky, once you cross over, it’s like never coming back.” Surprisingly, today on her birthday, she is crossing over to the other side. We curiously asked Katz what changed her mind to turn into a tweeple, finally? “I have come to the conclusion that there are some things that are best said yourself. Yes, I have been wary of social media for really long, and I have even voiced my concerns about it, but it is good to do things in life that scare you, isn’t it? I think there is a side to you that only you can show, nobody can do it for you. People around me have been coaxing me for years, but I do something only when I am ready for it. So now I took the plunge,” she tells us.
Well, this is a freewheeling medium, where celebs find adulation, criticism, trollers, fan clubs and hate forums. She quickly adds, “I am clear that unless there is something absolutely outrageous said about me, I am not going to use social media to give clarifications or make contradictions. For someone like me who is so guarded and shy, it was good to overcome my fear and have my own voice. That is what I am looking forward to. I will present myself in whatever way I am comfortable, I am not putting myself in someone else’s hands and that idea excites me. On this platform, you have no one else to blame or hold responsible for what you say.”
In an earlier interview to BT, talking about this she had said, ‘I want to protect myself. I know it is a platform where I can choose what I want to say, but I know there is negativity too, and I am very sensitive.’ Ask her if she still maintains that stand and she says, “Yes, I do. If someone comes and sits in front of me and starts saying horrible things, I will say I don’t want to talk about it as it’s not constructive. I think I will have the same approach here. I simply won’t engage in such conversations. I believe that on social media or otherwise, opinions are opinions and I don’t need to counter each and every one of them.” She giggles and adds, “Till some time ago I didn’t even know what these sites looked like. I probably know as much as a six-year old, I am just learning. I don’t want to presume or second-guess anything, instead I want to go with the flow. I think it will be fun to do a chat in the middle of the night and tell people, ‘Hey…I can’t sleep. What’s up?’”
On another note, there have been rumours about her teaming up with Kabir Khan and Ali Abbas Zafar for movies. What’s up, really? She laughs and says, “Yes, I am doing a film with everybody, I think most people choose to believe these rumours. I am in every filmmaker’s film. But frankly, it’s too early to say anything about this now.”
