Kiphire residents in fear as homes stand precariously after landslide
KIPHIRE — A landslide occurred at Medical Ward in Kiphire town on Sunday, prompting concerns for the safety of several families if immediate action is not taken.
An official from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kiphire told Eastern Mirror that immediate relief has been provided to the family affected by the landslide.
However, the area is prone to landslides, with some households evacuating their homes after a similar incident last year.
Adding to these concerns, the official said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert in the state, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days. If heavy rains persist, at least 15 to 20 households could be affected.
Local resident Akhacho Anar expressed worry, saying that his house could also be affected if the heavy rains persist. He urged the authorities to intervene promptly and take necessary measures to prevent further damage.
In this regard, the official said that a team from the district administration, led by the deputy commissioner, conducted site verification on Monday. The DDMA has also apprised the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority of the situation and will be submitting a full report.
“We visited the site on Sunday and even today (Monday) to ascertain the extent of damage and potential areas of damage,” he maintained.
