Plastic waste collection drive held in Medziphema
DIMAPUR — In commemoration of ‘World Environment Day,’ which is observed annually on June 5, the Medziphema administration under Chümoukedima district initiated a community plastic waste collection drive at Medziphema town on Saturday.
The administration conducted the plastic waste collection drive to reduce plastic pollution and promote recycling within the community in line with this year’s World Environment Day theme “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience,” stated a DIPR report.
All the offices both state and central, institutions, houses, commercial establishments and Medziphema town trade union participated in the drive initiated by the administration.
It stated that plastic waste from houses, offices, markets and surroundings were collected and segregated into different categories.
After plastic waste was gathered at the designated collection point, the waste management team collected the accumulated plastic waste and taken to a toxic waste site at plastic waste management unit constructed under SBM 2022-2023 by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).
The drive was a success with active participation from all public and government institutions.
ZTC organises ‘rid plastic’ competition
The Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) organised an inter-school competition titled ‘Rid Plastic’ on Saturday. A DIPR report stated that a total of 9 schools participated and collected 457.02 kg of plastic wastes from within the town. The EAC of Zunheboto, Mopling Phom, informed that the top three winning school would be felicitated with cash prizes of INR 15,000, INR 10,000 and INR 5000 on June 5.
