DIMAPUR — The vice chancellor of Nagaland University (NU), Professor Jagadish K Patnaik, launched the newsletter of Mass Communication department titled ‘MassCom Chronicle’ at its headquarters Lumani in Zunheboto district on Friday.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Patnaik congratulated the students and faculty of the Mass Communication department and suggested bringing out a tabloid size monthly newspaper with outreach news beyond the campus. Mentioning that Naga society is a rich flourishing society but was not able to capitalise the richness, he urged the students to take active part in disseminating positive ideas, information and messages to inform the masses about its important impact, an update from the university stated.

The vice chancellor also proposed to rename the department as ‘Journalism and Mass Communication’ and to start a Bachelor’s degree such as Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) along with a Masters programme. He stressed on having dual degrees according to the National Education Policy (NEP).

He further urged the department to increase its intake of students and proposed for more faculty members.

Yarenthung Ezung, controller of examination, and Albert Khizho, finance officer, were the special invitees of the event.

The programme was chaired by Shiken, 2nd semester student, while the welcome song was presented by students of Mass Communication department and the welcome address was delivered by A Das, assistant professor.

Brief notes on the department’s activities, events and challenges faced by the department were delivered by Salonger Jamir and Mercy, while a note from the Editor was put forward by Talikaba Ao.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Wapangsungla Longkumer, guest faculty of the department.
