KOHIMA — The Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, officially inducted Minister of Health and Family Welfare, P Paiwang Konyak, as the chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland State Branch (IRCSN) on Monday.

Addressing the induction programme held at Raj Bhavan in Kohima, the governor, who is also the president of the IRCSN, stressed the importance of understanding the rich history and tradition of the Red Cross movement, born out of compassion for fellow human beings.

Highlighting the symbiotic relationship between health and humanitarian work, Ganesan said the health minister being inducted as the chairman of IRCSN assumes significance.

He said that as the head of the public health delivery system in the state, the minister and his officials possess a unique vantage point to tackle the multifaceted challenges confronting society, particularly during emergencies.

By assuming the chairmanship of the IRCSN, the governor asserted that Paiwang reaffirms his dedication to fostering synergy between healthcare and humanitarian assistance, ensuring that no one is overlooked in their time of need.

Expressing gratitude for his induction, Paiwang conveyed optimism that they would overcome any obstacle and persist in making a significant impact in the lives of those they serve, supported by the dedication of volunteers, staff, partners and donors.

He cautioned that it is imperative for organisations like the Red Cross to remain prepared and technologically updated to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters.

Towards this, he said they can leverage technology, data-driven insights and best practices to optimise operations and enhance the effectiveness of Red Cross programmes and services.

Expressing gratitude to all involved for their dedication to the mission of the Indian Red Cross Society, he remarked, “Together, we will build a brighter future grounded in the principles of humanity and love.”

Akhale V Khamo, IRCSN general secretary, emphasised the Red Cross’s global impact over the past 160 years and highlighted Red Cross movement co-founder Jean Henri Dunant’s initiative to protect victims in conflict crises.

She said Nagaland too upholds the Red Cross’s principles of assisting without bias, preventing suffering and upholding human dignity.

She also stressed the pressing challenges society faces today, extending beyond war and conflicts to include the escalating threat of climate change, which poses significant risks to humans and all forms of life on earth.

Khamo further highlighted the IRCSN’s long-standing commitment since 1982 to providing humanitarian aid during conflicts, alleviating the suffering of the impoverished, and outreaching to victims of both natural and man-made disasters through relief materials, medical aid and financial assistance.

On the occasion, Genesan and Paiwang, accompanied by other officials, also flagged off a new ambulance donated by the governor to the IRCSN. Later, the minister paid a visit to the IRCSN office and interacted with Red Cross members.
