DIMAPUR — As part of Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, the Wokha district administration and District Election Office, in collaboration with Lotha Eloe Hoho (LEH) and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), organised a mock parliament debate for women on the topic “Men dictate the vote and voice of Naga women” in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner’s office in Wokha town on Thursday.

Delivering the keynote address, the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Wokha, K Furhesie, informed that the event is being organised for the second time under SVEEP campaign in Wokha district. He mentioned that the SVEEP campaign is a flagship programme of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to educate the voters and to promote voters literacy in the country, stated a DIPR report.

He informed that it is a multi-intervention programme that aims to reach out to the voters and citizens through different modes and media about the election process and in order to increase their awareness and promote their informed participation.

He added that the main objective of the campaign was to increase the voters turnout by 75% in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, purifying the electoral roll in every polling booth, bridging gender gap in enrolment turnout, to address urban and youth apathy in electoral participation and to enhance the quality of electoral participation in terms of ethical voting through such awareness programmes.

Report stated that 10 women participants took part in the debate competition. Students and Lotha Eloe Hoho representatives led by its chairperson, Thungbeni Ngullie, attend the programme.

Later, the assistant electoral officer (AEO) of Wokha, Chisho K Swu, briefed the participants about the functioning of the EVM and also gave a hands-on demonstration.

The judges of the debate were associate professor, Khyopenthung Tsopoe; principal of Doyang Polytechnic, Julia Achumi; and post graduate teacher (PGT) at GHSS, Mhonbeni Ezong.
