IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, has mooted developing Ukhrul into a summer city of the state.

Biren Singh stated this during his visit to Ukhrul on Wednesday. He was accompanied by nine cabinet ministers and nine MLAs along with the chief secretary during a day-long visit to Ukhrul district headquarters.

Highlighting that with the growing population in Ukhrul, the town is facing land issues while taking up development works, the CM mulled the idea of developing a new Ukhrul township near Sirarokhong and urged the people of Ukhrul to consider it.

Expressing concern over the water scarcity problem of the hill town, he declared that INR 6 crore has been sanctioned for augmentation of water supply to Ukhrul town as immediate relief.

Assuring the construction of a dam at Shirui at the cost of INR 180–200 crore to pump water to entire Ukhrul to be taken up as the first priority, he sought the support of all including CSOs and MLAs to settle any dispute so that the construction of the dam could be completed without any problems.

On the opening of mobile internet, he urged the people, especially the students and youth, to be patient and wait for at least some more days.

Singh also assured to lay the foundation for a Meitei and Tangkhul heritage museum at Hundung in order to let the new generation of all indigenous people come and live together in peace.

Assuring that a nursing college would be set up in Ukhrul soon, he also said that Prime Minister Modi has planned to set up at least one medical college in each district. In this regard, he has assured to set up a medical college in Ukhrul on priority.

In his welcome note, Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah urged the chief minister to organise the Shirui festival again since the latter is the patron of the beautiful festival, which was upgraded to a state level in 2017.

During the visit, Biren also chaired a cabinet meeting before joining a public function apart from attending a reception ceremony at Hundung village later in the day.

Biren also inaugurated 21 projects, laid the foundation stone for 24 projects and handed over projects worth INR 64.38 crores to the public of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
