Supreme Court-appointed committee visits Kangpokpi in Manipur
IMPHAL — The Supreme Court-appointed three-member committee headed by former chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice Gita Mittal, visited Kangpokpi district headquarters, 45 km north of Imphal today.
The three-member committee included former judge of Bombay High Court, Shalini Phansalkar Joshi and former judge of Delhi High Court, Asha Menon.
The three-member committee accompanied by the state’s chief secretary, Dr. Vineet Joshi, visited the hill district to oversee relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding measures in Manipur.
On their arrival at the district headquarters, the committee members were welcomed by Kangpokpi’s deputy commissioner, Mahesh Chaudhari, along with the district officials at the DC’s office complex in Kangpokpi.
Later, the visiting team met with the district level officers (DLO) and held thorough discussion on the prevailing situation, other requirements and issues faced in the district.
After the meeting, the team along with the district administration officials visited two relief centres at Keithelmanbi High School and DIET Centre, Leikop, under Champhai sub-division and interacted with the people taking shelters in those centres.
More than 500 persons each are accommodated in the relief centres. The team also inspected the under-constructed fabricated houses at Keithelmanbi. The authorities planned to construct more than 150 houses. During the day’s visit, the committee members also distributed relief items to the inmates at the relief centres.
NEPO officials call on Manipur Governor
A team of North East Peoples’ Organisation (NEPO) of Manipur chapter namely Prof. W Nabakumar Singh, Ch Priyoranjan Singh, Prof. N Mohilal Meitei, S Bhubol and Dr. Kh Gourashyam called on Manipur Governor, Anusuiya Uikey, at Raj Bhavan today.
The team, while highlighting their activities for harmonious co-existence of different communities in Manipur, appealed to the Governor to initiate peace process in order to restore peace and normalcy at the earliest.
They lauded the Governor for her constructive activities towards reaching out to both the communities in conflict and expressed their readiness to give input in assisting the government in the peace process.
Governor reiterated that most of the people in the state long for restoration of peace and normalcy at the earliest. For this, she stated that hatred towards each community should be removed from both the communities. She also lauded their efforts towards bringing peace and normalcy in the state.
Meanwhile, a Gujarat-based social worker, Sanjay Tula, also called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan today and highlighted the activities taken up by his organisation called Vishwagram in various parts of the country for affected children in natural or manmade disasters.
ABVP leader arrives
The national organisation secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Ashish Chauhan, arrived in Manipur on a three-day visit with an aim to foster peace and educational empowerment in the region.
Recognising the importance of education in shaping the future of the youth, Ashish Chauhan distributed various study materials to the students including books, notebooks, and stationery. He also imparted valuable lessons to the students by emphasising on the importance of education, unity and peace building in the region.
