DIMAPUR — A disturbing video of a man assaulting a Naga woman in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on September 25, has set a chain of condemnations from various sections.
In the 4:12 second video grab, which surfaced on Thursday, a man can be seen hitting the woman violently. The incident was reported to have taken place around 3.30 am at the Galaxy Spa, which is run by the accused identified as Mohsin. The victim is said to have been residing in Ahmedabad for around nine years and runs a ladies beauty parlour.
When contacted, the president of Naga Students’ Union of Gujarat, Matsungmeren Pongen, told Eastern Mirror that an FIR was lodged on September 27 evening at the Sindhu Bhavan Police Station, Ahmedabad, and the accused Mohsin booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 354 A, 294 , 323.
However, he informed that Mohsin is still on the run and police have launched a search to apprehend him. Appealing to the youths to be vigilant, Pongen said the unfortunate incident should serve as a warning, especially women.
The union also appealed to all citizens not to spread misinformation about the incident in social media and to maintain peaceful harmony while investigation is underway.
In a condemnation note, the union expressed outrage over the “reprehensible act of violence” that took place within the premises of The Galaxy Spa.
“It is deeply disturbing to hear that a member of our community was subjected to such brutality…The Naga community has been an integral part of the diverse and culturally rich fabric of Gujarat for many years. We believe in the principles of unity in diversity and the peaceful coexistence of people from all backgrounds. Incidents like this not only tarnish the image of the state but also undermine the harmonious atmosphere we strive to maintain,” the union said.
The union also demanded that immediate action should be taken against those responsible for the “heinous “act to ensure that justice is administered in accordance with the laws of the state.
It was reported that initially the woman was not willing to file a complaint against the accused Mohsin. However, after the police along with the student union convinced her, an FIR was lodged at the Sindhu Police Station.
In another video, the victim can be seen narrating that assault started over “loss” of the ladies salon which she and the accused co-owned.
In the video, she also mentioned that she was about to dial the police emergency number 100 but that her phone was snatched away by Mohsin.
On not registering a police complaint, she stated that Mohsin had apologised which is why she did not file any complaint.
“After the video went viral, Police came to know about this. I was receiving constant calls today. I was not ready to file an FIR even today, but I was told by all that it has happened to me today, tomorrow it must not happen to someone else as well. All have supported me though I am from the North East. Police have stood up behind me, and so has the media. I am feeling good and I thank all,” the woman said in the video.
