DIMAPUR — The department of Journalism and Mass Communication of St. Joseph University, Chümoukedima, hosted a Google News Initiative (GNI) one-day training programme on ‘combating disinformation with visual verification’ on September 15 at its premises.

According to a press release, Dr. Moalemba Jamir, a certified trainer of GNI and associate editor of The Morung Express, was the resource person for the programme.

Speaking on the topic, Jamir explained the meaning, characteristics, and motive behind fake news, disinformation, mal-information, misinformation, etc. through case studies and interactive activities.

Stressing on the need for fact-checking, especially by mediapersons and students of journalism, Jamir demonstrated the visual verification of images and videos through Google reverse image search, Yandex, TinEye, etc.

Maintaining that ‘there is no silver bullet’ to verify visual contents, he appealed to students to abstain from circulating unverified online content and check their authenticity through the techniques explained during the training.

In all, 50 people attended the programme.
