DIMAPUR — Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung, observed its 64th foundation day on Friday at the college auditorium.
Associate Professor and head of the Department of English, FAC, Dr. Lanurenla, the speaker of the celebration, gave an overview of the humble beginnings of the college and the vision for education that began before Nagaland became a state.
Lanurenla said leaders like RC Chiten, R Ngullie, Rev. Subongmeiba, Imnaonen, Supongnuklu, Mayangnokcha, Imlong Chang, Dr. Longri Ao, Khelhoshe Sema and a few others along with then Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner, Major Khating, envisioned the necessity of an educational institution in Mokokchung.
Subsequently, a sum of INR 30,000 was collected after a donation drive of 50 paise from every household, she said.
Lanurenla emphasised the establishment of the college, which initially started as a night college, was not a single man’s vision but the “collaborative power” of the people in Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto.
The passion that Fazl Ali, the then Governor of Assam, had for the Nagas was manifested in his contribution of INR 50,000 towards the establishment of the college, she said.
The academician further recollected that the college started with 43 students, five subjects and three teachers, including the principal.
Paying tributes to the pioneers, leaders, former principals and faculty of the college, Lanurenla posed a question to the students, “What can you do for your alma mater?”
The celebration witnessed various performances from the students, prize distribution for the September Melange participants and felicitation of meritorious students for the year 2023.
Chubaienla Jamir Academy Award for college topper went to Nibha Singh from Zoology department; Rejuna from History department and Sashirenla Jamir from Zoology department received Late Dr. Longrizung Award for academic excellence in Arts and Science streams, respectively.
Dr. AK Chaudary Excellence Award for the highest scorer in Maths was bagged by Supongnaro and Dr. Watimongla Pongener Award for the highest scorer in English went to Imnajungshi Jamir.
Heikuding received the Linnaeus Award for highest scorer in Botany, while Yashilemla and Talitula won the Department of Education and Department of Sociology Excellence Award for highest scorer, respectively.
Talimongla, a university topper from the Department of Geography was also honoured by the college. The Evangelical Union Student of the Year Award was won by Zanyep Konyak.
