DIMAPUR — The Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has objected to the recent notification issued by the deputy commissioner of Kohima regarding “the publication of the draft updated list of Non-Naga Local Indigenous Nepal/Gorkha residents under Kohima district” with June 11, 2016, as the qualifying date for inclusion in the list.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the CNTC described the move as a mischievous attempt to subvert the rights of the people and that it violates the Nagaland government’s standing notification that “clearly maintained the cut-off year for the purpose of recognising Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland as 1st Dec 1963”.
It said even the Nagaland Gorkha Association has asked for two cut-off dates –31/12/1940, 01/12/1963 – to the commission of Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), and so, “arriving at 11 June 2016 as qualifying date is simply an atrocious decision laced with some other ulterior motives”.
Claiming that ‘the DCs of Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland are also supposed to have issued similar Notifications, imposing their own qualifying dates’, the CNTC urged the state government to direct the DCs to withdraw the notification to avoid “complications and social unrest”.
It also demanded the implementation of RIIN with December 1 1963 as the cut-off date without further delay.
Mentioning that RIIN is the brainchild of CM Neiphiu Rio, it said there is no reason for delay in its implementation if “he is concerned for the people of Nagaland and its future generations”.
