Nagaland: More women pursuing higher education than men
Women have been found to be pursuing higher education more than men in Nagaland, according to a government of India report.
The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-2021 recently released by the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, showed a total of 7095 students were estimated to have enrolled in the post-graduate level, out of which 2843 were male and 4252 female.
In M. Phil, a total of 53 students were enrolled with 23 male and 30 female; an estimate of 593 students enrolled in Ph.D out of which 279 were male and 314 female.
In the undergraduate programme, a total of 36828 students were estimated to have enrolled in the state, out of which 17600 were male and 19228 female.
For PG diploma, 113 students were enrolled (male -42 and female -71); and total diploma enrolment was 2069 (male – 859 and female – 1210). The total certificate course enrolment was 197 (male – 98 and female-99), and in integrated course, there were six male students enrolled and zero female, the Survey showed.
Under the types of institutions, universities and its constituent units had an estimated enrolment of 11773 in 2020-21 with 5787 male and 5986 female.
In colleges, the total enrolment stands at 33296 out of which 15165 were male and 1813 female. Stand alone institutions had 1885 enrolments with 798 male and 1087 female.
The gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education (18-23 years) based on 2011 population is estimated at 17.3 (female – 19.3, male -15.4). Meanwhile, the Gender Parity Index (GPI) in higher education (18-23 years) is 1.26.
The number of teachers among various social groups is 2433 in all categories with 1059 male and 1374 female. For the Scheduled Caste, there were 49 (male-36, female-13); ST – 1978 (male-713, female-1265), OBC- 188 (male -88, female-30)
The number of teachers among minority and PWD included two PWD (one male and female each), Muslims-26 (male- 21, female – five) and other minority communities consisted of 2061 (male-770, female – 1291).
Under the state post-wise number of male and female teachers categories, professors and equivalent stands at 169 (male -114, female – 55), reader and associate professors is 169 (male-69, female-100). lecturer/ assistant professors is 1939 (male-814, female -1125), demonstrator /tutor is 101 (male-40, female – 61), teacher temporary etc., is 50 (male-19, female-31), visiting teacher is five (male-three, female-two).
The total number of teachers for the year 2020-21 was 15,51,070 (as compared to 15,03,156 for the year 2019- 20). Out of these, 57.1% were male teachers and 42.9% female teachers.
But in states like Kerala, Punjab, Chandigarh, Goa, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Haryana and Lakshadweep, female teachers were more than male teachers, the report stated.
Nagaland has five universities including one central university, one institute of national importance and three state private universities that have been registered and responded in AISHE.
For specialisation universities, Nagaland has three general, one chartered accountant, and one technical.
It stated that there are 67 colleges with 12 private (unaided), 35 private (aided) and 20 government colleges.
In the specialization-wise colleges, there are 53 general, two Arts, five Education or Teacher Education, one Engineering and Technology, one Fine Arts, three Law, one nursing, and one in the others category.
Two colleges (one each of aided and unaided private colleges) were established in 2020, it added.
