Manipur reports three black fungus cases

Three cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) have been detected in Manipur till date while one person passed away earlier this month from the disease.

According to sources, on June 18, it was reported that a team of ENT surgeons of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal successfully conducted surgery on a post covid patient for mucormycosis.

A press release undersigned by the media advisor of RIMS N Philip Singh stated that team of ENT surgeons of RIMS comprising of Th Sudhiranjan, Dr. O Priyakumar and Dr. N Jiten Singh successfully conducted surgery for mucormycosis involving the nose and paranasal sinuses in a post covid patient. Anaesthetist team was lead by L Pradip and Dr. Eshori Longjam

It also stated that the patient was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 infection in RIMS hospital under Ch Dhanaraj. All parts affected by the mucormycosis have been cleared and the patient is stable after the surgery, it added. According to the press release, it stated that during the surgery, mucormycosis was found to involve the right maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, middle and inferior turbinates, and the posterior part of the nasal septum. Sphenoid sinus was found to be oedematous but clear of gross disease. The lamina papyracea (thin wall separating orbit and nasal cavity) and floor of the brain was found to be intact. All parts involved by the mucormycosis were cleared of the disease. Patient is stable after the surgery, it stated.
