Imphal, April 23 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, led the people in paying homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives in the Battle of Khongjom (1891) on Khongjom Day today.
Khongjom Day is observed every year on April 23 in the state to pay homage to the martyrs, who laid down their lives for the cause of their motherland in the Battle of Khongjom (1891) on Khongjom Day. This year’s observation was organised by the Thoubal district administration.
Singh and the deputy chief minister, Y Joykumar, led the ministers, MP, MLAs, top ranking police and civil officers and others in offering floral tributes at the Khongjom War Memorial atop Khebaching and later to the statue of Paona Brajabashi located at the foothill. They also paid floral tributes to the statue of Paona Brajabashi, located at the foothill of Khebaching before they offered Tarpan at Khongjom River.
A contingent of Manipur Rifles sounded the Last Post and a two minutes silence was observed in honour of the martyrs.
Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Singh called upon the people of the state to follow the footsteps of the forefathers with a sense of nationalism and work hard together by maintaining unity among different communities for ushering in overall development in the state.
The day was observed in a low-key celebration with a small group of delegates due to the recent surge in Covid cases.
The Thoubal district administration has made elaborate arrangement to ensure social distancing to avoid Covid-19 infections. There were also reports of observing the day at different places by different organisations.
On the 130th Khongjom War anniversary, the CorCom, a coordination committee of militant organisations in Manipur, also paid its revolutionary homage to the brave leaders who laid down their lives in protecting Manipur during the war for freedom waged against the mighty British.
