Kohima, April 7 (EMN): Water is essential for one’s well-being and maintenance but Kohima citizens suffer from water scarcity as the perennial water sources are not adequate to meet the requirement of the growing population.
Many citizens buy water to meet their needs, but not everyone can afford to do that. Considering the plight of certain citizens, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) initiated a measure to address water problem.
On April 7, residents of New Market colony, Kohima, received water supplied by the Kohima Municipal Council. A volunteer informed that they are giving out two buckets of water each per household.
KMC administrator Kovi Meyase issued a notification on April 6 that it would distribute 2000 litres of water free of cost to all the colonies as movements of vehicles as well as citizens are restricted with the nation lockdown. He stated that Kohima reels under water shortage even in normal times and it has increasingly become a cause for greater concern.
It notified that during the lockdown period, the KMC would extend assistance to all the colonies in Kohima, both recognised and unrecognised, by distributing 2000 litres water on a daily basis as far as possible if not on alternate days. The target group would be the daily wage earners and the poorest of the poor, it stated.
Meyase has also asked the wards to identify the water receiving points, identify genuine beneficiaries, and appoint volunteers to supervise and monitor the distribution of water in a systematic manner so that chaotic scenes are avoided and strict social distancing is maintained at all cost.
