Shanjuthung Ngullie is the new Spelling Bee champion

Kohima, Oct. 4 (EMN): Shanjuthung Ngullie nailed two words: ‘Requiem’ and ‘Valetudinarian’ to be declared as the ultimate winner of the eighth edition of the Nagaland Spelling Bee Championship,  organised under the aegis of Fountain Club and State Council of Educational Research and Training at the Capital Convention Centre, which concluded on Friday evening.

The champion Ngullie, a class 9 student of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Kohima, walked home richer by INR 60,000. He also received a citation and a trophy.

Another class 9 student, Aloino Hope of Olympic Higher Secondary School, Zunheboto bagged the second position to pocket INR 40,000, a citation and a trophy.

The third position went to Aneidi Sano (class 7) of Baptist Mission School, Kohima and he pocketed INR 20,000. The fourth position, and a cash prize of INR 15,000, went to Nimeweu Khalo of Kendra Vidyalaya Sangatham, Kohima. The Young Speller Award was given to Liza Jacob, a class 7 student of Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Dimapur. Keletsole Mekro of CD King School Jotsoma; Mhalo E Humtsoe of Little Flower Higher Secondary School; Notsonu Yene of Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama; and Keneino Thorie of Trinity School were the others who managed to reach the quarterfinals.

The member secretary of Nagaland Pollution Control Board, Dr. Kenei Miachieo graced the closing function as special guest and gave away the prizes to the winners.

Some words like ‘mythomania,’ ‘spaghetti,’ ‘resuscitate,’ ‘noblesse,’ ‘coiffeur,’ ‘gibberish,’ ‘couchette,’ ‘umbrage,’ ‘hobbledehoy,’ ‘blitzkrieg,’ ‘recrudesce,’ ‘arachnophobia,’ ‘hoodlum,’ ‘mellifluous’ etc., could not be spelled by the competitors.

It may be mentioned that in the eighth edition of the Nagaland Spelling Bee Championship 2019, a total of 61 spellers from 23 schools had registered for participation, and 32 spellers qualified for the preliminary round to vie for the championship.
