KOHIMA, FEBRUARY 24

SMILE Train has successfully completed its 19th Mission Nagaland at Oking Hospital, Kohima, by performing a total 204 free surgeries for cleft lip and palate and thereby restoring smile back into their life and a new hope to their future endeavor.
During the three day ‘Free Health Camp’ which concluded today, altogether 15 patients of both cleft lip and palate from the state were admitted. Among the patients, a 35 years old man was operated successfully, who was a cleft on upper lip, said Smile Train Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Palin Kh, Shija Hospitals, Imphal.
The 35 years old man, who was successfully operated during this camp, said he came across ‘Smile Train Mission Nagaland’ from relative, who show him the picture of cleft lip from the newspaper. He didn’t go to school because of the defect, and didn’t know that such defect could be treated and that too free of cost. He was optimistic that he will get married after corrective surgery.
Patients with birth defect of cleft lip and palate live in shame, isolation and heartache without any means to get it repaired. They usually don’t go to school because of the defect. They become normal after the repair. Many of them have become doctors, engineer, scientist, artists etc after the repair.
The 20th Mission Nagaland will be conducted in the second week of March. However, the exact date would be informed in later days. Meanwhile, Mission Nagaland has appreciated the role of media in making the free surgery camps successful and requested the social workers, church leaders, teachers and politicians to help eradicate the problems of cleft lip and palate by disseminating information of free treatment.
