Kohima, Dec 21: The 44th sports meet of the Western Angami ‘D’ Sports Association (WADSA) concluded today at WAPO ground Sechü Zubza. The closing function was graced by Weprepe Mero, personal secretary to Neiba Kronu, Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Coordination, Evaluations, Monitoring and Taxes, as the guest of honour.
Sechü Zubza Youth Organisation (SZYO) emerged as the overall champions in the three-day event which conducted sports events such as football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, sepaktakraw and athletics.
In men’s football, SZYO defeated Kiruphema Youth Organisation (KYO) 5-1 and lifted the Pezasatuo Memorial Football Trophy, while KYO downed SZYO in men’s volleyball final to lift the challenger trophy arranged by Akho Neikha, proprietor of Theja Petrol depot, Kiruphema village. KYO had a convincing victory as they won in straight sets.
In women’s volleyball, SZYO emerged as the champions following their victory over Sechüma Youth Organisation (SYO) in the final.
A total of five youth organisations from Sechüma, Sechü Zubza, Kiruphema, Menguzouma and Thekrejuma participated in the three-day event which commenced on December 19.
Speaking at the valedictory function, Weprepe Mero encouraged the sportspersons to set their determination at the top, while he advised them to maintain good discipline in their effort to climb higher.
Citing the examples of sportspersons from some African nations who are economically poor, but have excelled at the top level of competition in the world, Mero maintained that these players (Africans) have achieved because they had the determination to achieve at the highest level.
He observed that the Nagas have talents in sports, but regretted that many sportspersons fail to utilize their talents to the fullest. To this, he urged the sportspersons not to be disheartened for the lack of proper facilities in the State, but to keep trying hard every day with continuous practice and training.
He also advised the sportspersons to wisely utilize their time, especially in social activities and gatherings.
The closing function was chaired by WADSA general secretary Kepeneilie Vimerha, while athletics secretary Rokoneikho Rhatsu delivered the vote of thanks. The guest of honour also gave away the prizes to the winners.
Meanwhile, a new team of WADSA for the tenure 2017-2018 was elected headed by Neicasatuo Visienyü of Kiruphema village as the president.
The selected players, both in games and athletics, will represent WADSA at the forthcoming Western Angami Sports Association (WASA) meet scheduled to be held next year from January 11 to 13.
