Sechü Zubza, April 6 (EMN): In an attempt to give commuters a smooth ride between Kohima and Dimapur, Sechü Zubza Taxi Drivers’ Union (SZTDU) carried out a social work along the stretch of National Highway 29 today.

Dusty and slippery roads have been the talk of commuters ever since the earth cutting for the 4-lane highway began last year. The continuous downpour of rain during the past couple of weeks has worsened the condition of the road and only added to the woes and misery of travellers.

“Seeing the worsening condition of the road, SZTDU members decided to volunteer our service, atleast for a day, for the convenience of the public, said Zhangusatuo Rhatsu, SZTDU president.

On the day, SZTDU members filled up numerous potholes on the highway with mud and stones for a stretch of nearly four km from Classic Club waiting shed till the end of Sechü Zubza’s jurisdiction, bordering Kiruphema village.

“Being from a village/town where the national highway passes through, and where we make the maximum use of the road, we felt we should be the first citizens among the Nagas to take care of our roads,” Rhatsu said adding “It’s time we (public) should also learn to contribute on our part instead of expecting from the government to initiate on every matters that concerns us.”

“Though the voluntary service which we rendered today may just be a small step, yet it is satisfying on our part to have done so,” Rhatsu added.

The social work was the first of its kind organised by SZTDU, wherein a total 25 members, out of 38, took part in the day’s programme organised by the union, informed SZTDU secretary Zakiemelie Khwakhrie.
