PIPHEMA — Advisor of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio, on Monday inaugurated the new campus of Modern College at Piphema in the presence of college management, faculties, students, public leaders,  neighbouring village leaders and well wishers.

The college is situated above national highway 29, 22 km away from the state capital, and about 18 km from Chümoukedima with a total area of 102 acres, furnished with a botanical garden, academic blocks, hostels, indoor stadium and modern amenities.

Addressing the inaugural programme, Zhaleo Rio expressed delight that Modern College is the first college established in his assembly constituency and in the Chakhroma area. He urged the management of the college to accommodate the students as much as possible to cater to the needs of the people around.

He acknowledged the land owners and the Piphema villages for parting ways with their land, adding that in Nagaland, land issues were hindrances to development. He commended the Piphema Khenu Krüta Krotho (PKKK) in facilitating the same and asked the land donors to honor the agreement in toto.

Rio told the students to take advantage of the modern facilities at Modern College and advised them to make it their endeavour to study sincerely and also earn a good name for themselves and the college in order to create a good benchmark.

The advisor said education is central to the development of an individual person and stressed on the need of acquiring quality education and knowledge of economics, social, political and development while acquiring knowledge of ethics and skills for good governance, social harmony and peace.

He exhorted the students to have a dream and not only think of getting a degree and certificates alone, to curtail unemployment problems in the state. He pointed out that if Nagas give up the present trend and venture differently, they can excel.

He also challenged the students to try for UPSC, NPSC and NSSB exams, adding that the government of the day is promoting meritocracy.

Meanwhile, Pelezotuo Kuotsu, President of PKKK, in his speech expressed gratitude to the management for taking the initiative to establish the institution in the village and benefit the students.

President of Chakhroma Public Organisation, Zhato Kimho, said the college is not only an institution but hope for the people of Piphema and nearby villages. He added that it is comforting the parents and citizens at large as a college is being established within their locality to get quality education.

He also assured of all possible support to safeguard the college in days to come.

Managing Director of Modern College, Pelee Hekha shared about the Piphema campus and informed that the college has completed 25 years and is now in its 26th year.

He said the college functions under Modern Society of Education where three institutions are running—Modern Higher Secondary School (Nursery- Class 12 with all three streams—Arts, Commerce and Science), Modern College offering BA and B Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) and Modern Institute of teachers’ Education (MITE) which offers Bachelor of Education.

He informed that the college campus at Piphema has 102 acres of land, 24×7 water supply throughout the year, 63 KVA transformer, street lights across the campus and all buildings fitted with power backup inverters to get uninterrupted power supply.

The college has a botanical garden with five acres of land, owing to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)signed with the Botanical Survey of India BSI, MoEF & CC in 2019, and is the only college in Northeast to be supported by BSI.

Infrastructure at the campus are academic block, indoor stadium, three hostels, botanical garden, dairy farm (milk supplied for staff and hostellers), fishery pond and an orange orchard besides sports facilities such as football, volleyball, basketball with indoor stadium for badminton and table tennis.

He informed that Modern College will have an office at Kohima where Modern Higher Secondary School (MHSSS) now operates and the IGNOU study centre will continue to operate in the Kohima office.

Earlier, the guest of honour also inaugurated the botanical garden, academic block, hostel and indoor stadium and Pezangulie Keyho, Pastor, Piphema ‘A’ Baptist Church offered the dedicatory prayer.

Rio also released the college silver jubilee souvenir during the inaugural programme.
