Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mokokchung, conducted a six-day skill training of rural youth (STRY) on vermin-composting in Chuchuyimlang village.

It was held in association with State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Medziphema, and MANAGE, Hyderabad from February 6 to the 11th.

An update from ATMA Mokokchung stated that the deputy project director of ATMA, Sentinaro Longchar, highlighted the aims and objectives of the training and encouraged all the participants to actively partake during the six-day training course.

The resource persons of the technical sessions were Toshinenla Pongen, JSCO from the department of Soil and Water Conservation, Mokokchung; Sentinaro Longchar, deputy project director; Shilunokdang, assistant technology manager of Mangkolemba block, and block technology manager and assistant technology manager of Chuchuyimlang block.

It stated that resource persons covered topics on ‘Introduction to vermiculture and vermi-composting;’ ‘Importance of vermicompost;’ ‘Overview of potential benefits and constraints;’ ‘Methods of composting and preparation of vermicompost;’ ‘Identification of basic characteristics of worm;’ ‘Role of earthworms in improving soil fertility;’ ‘Selection of site, tools and equipments used in vermicomposting;’ ‘Construction of vermicomposting site;’ ‘Working with worms;’ ‘Nutrient content of vermicompost;’ ‘Pest and diseases;’ ‘Environmental risk and benefits, application of vermiwash;’ ‘Scope of vermi technology in organic farming and post harvest management;’ and ‘General first aid precautions in vermicomposting.’

It added that topics on ‘Revenue generation;’ ‘Basic marketing skills and success stories on Vermicomposting’ were also shared to the participants.

Besides, a practical session and hands-on demonstration on preparation of vermi-bed was conducted with the active participation of all the trainees.

The six-day training concluded with a valedictory programme where certificates were distributed to the participants.

Altogether, 15 unemployed youth from Chuchuyimlang village attended the skill training programme. It further stated that inputs such as portable vermicompost beds, watering can and earthworms (Eiseniafetida) were distributed to the participants. Dimapur, Feb. 13 (EMN)
