Youth receive value addition, packaging training in Medziphema

DIMAPUR — The State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Medziphema, organised a six-day skill training of rural youth (STRY) programme on ‘Value addition and packaging of fruits and vegetables—phase I’ from March 4 to 9 in Medziphema in association with the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad.

According to a press release, during the inaugural programme, Tiajungla Longchar, deputy project director of SAMETI and nodal officer of STRY, provided an overview of the programme, while Dr. Watimongla Jamir, director of SAMETI and principal of (Integrated Extension Training Centre (IETC),, Medziphema, emphasised the significance of value addition in fruits and vegetables and its potential for entrepreneurial opportunities.

The training programme covered topics including the preparation of ginger candy, chilli pickles in oil, carambola (star fruit) ready-to-serve (RTS), king chilli pickles, turmeric powder, papaya tutti frutti, as well as the packaging, labelling, and storage of processed products.

The resource persons for the training programme were Dr. Moasosang Longkumer, assistant horticulture specialist and post-harvest technology in-charge at the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, along with Tiajungla Longchar.

At the conclusion of the training programme, certificates, training manuals, and prepared products were distributed to the participants. In total, 15 participants benefited from the training.
