With the culmination programme of week-long traffic awareness, the Youth Association of Nagaland (YAN) extended sincere acknowledgement to the traffic police and S.P. Dimapur for their commendable service rendered towards the improvement of congenial traffic regulation in and around Dimapur city.
YAN president Hetoi Chishi and general secretary Zhalie Chuzho in a release reminded the department of some ignorant traffic wardens who impose fine of cash on the traffic rules violators, especially the commercial goods carriers around the traffic point and on the roadside without reporting the matter to the office were mostly seen adding to traffic jam which is questionable by the law.
The YAN urged upon higher authority to seriously come out with measures to address the problem and suggested to strictly disallow heavy and commercial from entry into the town area between 6 am to 7 pm especially in the state capital Kohima and commercial hub Dimapur.
Further, it urged the state government to sensitize the matter and examine the feasibility to bifurcate the traffic police department as to assimilate/familiarize and redress the grievances. It said, almost all the district headquarters in the state are not planned and that there is less chance for any new road connectivity. State capital Kohima and some other districts are now facing acute traffic congestion and with the increase of population, remaining districts are expected to face the same situation, it added.
The YAN pointed out that government officials and all the different departmental staff are always late in the office and leave the office early in order to reach home before dark. And for that matter, the general public hardly visits one office a day even when there is an urgency of communicative work from one office to the other, it said.
“Unnecessary accidents take place due to traffic jam problem. Pedestrian are at all times left to their own risk as there is lack of measures for the safety of the pedestrian. Almost all the district traffic offices are being cluttered with damaged and accident vehicles, which looks really awkward for any township and that proper and separate site may be required,” the release said. The YAN said it would monitor closely and coordinate in this matter and reminded the concerned authority to co-operate with the youth.
