Written works essential for Tenyidie language to thrive—Dr. Liezietsu
KOHIMA — Describing books as the driving force of language and literature, the president of Ura Academy, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, on Saturday called upon writers, authors, and poets to make best use of their talent ‘in the interest of the community and posterity’.
He was addressing the first-ever Tenyidie Writers and Poets Meet held at Ura Academy Hall in Kohima. Ura Academy is a literary body committed to the preservation and perpetuation of Tenyimia culture and its language—Tenyidie.
Liezietsu expressed delight at the first-of-its-kind event that brought together Tenyidie language enthusiasts who have contributed towards the promotion and development of the language over the years.
Highlighting that 64 Naga tribes inhabit various states as recorded by Rev. VK Nuh in his book ‘The Naga Chronicle’, the president opined that there could be more than 70 Naga languages. He pointed out the advancement of Tenyidie language, which was introduced at Nagaland University 26 years ago, crediting God’s love and favor for it becoming the first Naga language to be taught and studied at the university level. Nine scholars have been awarded PhD degrees so far and more are pursuing their studies.
Liezietsu informed the gathering that scholars of Tenyidie have researched and documented various indigenous folklores, traditions, and other practices among the Tenyimi communities, with ongoing efforts for other Naga communities. He commended the works of these researchers.
The president stated that literature is the foundation and cornerstone of civilisation and acknowledged the immense contributions of all writers, authors, and poets towards Tenyidie literature over the years.
Furthermore, Liezietsu encouraged more writings in Tenyidie, expressing hope that during the next meeting of a similar setting, many more books would be published and launched.
On the occasion, books written by Vizonyü Liezietsu—‘Dievi mu mhasicako’ (Wisdom and Archaic Words); Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu—Theza-e kedipuo ga?’; and ‘Thie we a vie (Geizo da)’ a collection of poetry by Keviyiekhrieü Phewhuo, published by Ura Academy, were also released.
Speeches were delivered by writers Rev. Savito Nagi and Neichüriezo Chücha, while Zacupa Chotso and Vesetso Rose recited poetry. Neisevituo Sorhie read from his book ‘A neikezivi’.
On the occasion, tribute was also paid to the late Prof. Dr. D Kuolie, who served as the secretary general of Ura Academy until his passing.
On the evening of October 25, the Ura Academy Board of Directors’ conclave was held.
