DIMAPUR — The District Health Society Zunheboto observed World Population Day on the theme ‘Healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies for the wellbeing of mother and child’ at Suruhuto Primary Health Centre, Zunheboto, on July 12.

District Programme Officer (Reproductive and Child Health/Universal Immunisation Programme) Dr. Heto Swu, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the significance of World Population Day and the Population Stabilisation Fortnight activities, which will be carried out from July 11 to the 24th in all blocks and villages within Zunheboto district.

According to a press release, he stated that it is important to maintain an adequate spacing of three years between two children for the health of both mother and child, and to adopt family planning procedures, especially post-partum or post-abortion.

He added that various family planning methods will be made available, including free services such as post-partum sterilisation, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and post-partum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) insertions, vasectomy, and tubectomy.

The use of contraceptives and condoms will also be promoted, alongside awareness efforts through information, education, and communication (IEC) activities, interpersonal communication, focus group discussions, the distribution of leaflets, and the display of posters.

A reproductive and child health camp was also conducted following the programme at the Primary Health Centre, Suruhuto.

The medical team included District Programme Officer (UIP/RCH) Dr. Heto Swu, senior specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr. Kapfo, ophthalmologist Dr. Lipokyanger, Dr. Gihuka, Dr. Tokaito, dentist Dr. Kiyeto, and staff from DPMU, BPMU, RBSK MMU, and DAPCU.

During the camp, 285 people received free medical services, including six sterilisation procedures, eight IUCD insertions, seven antenatal care (ANC) consultations, 32 ultrasounds, 72 eye examinations, 78 dental treatments, and various non-communicable disease (NCD) screenings and laboratory tests.
